STORY 05

Behind the Scenes of Art Creation

Creating
Together

Special encounters often bring new ideas and inspirations. During the two years since Mari Katayama first partnered with Nabtesco, she has visited and engaged in conversations with ALLUX 2 designers, manufacturers, and prosthetists. These encounters have sparked her enthusiasm for collaboration with Nabtesco, leading to the creation of two remarkable works of art.

New Collaboration:
Stepping Out
in Bright Red Heels

Nabtesco provided the ALLUX 2, and then the stunning red Mari K high heels were brought to life with the collaboration of Katayama’s shoe design partner, the Italian shoe brand Sergio Rossi. Just as the endlessly dancing feet and red shoes in the fairy tale The Red Shoes symbolize an unstoppable force, Katayama’s red high heels embody her determination and willpower. Katayama brought the appeal of these Mari K heels to her collaboration with Nabtesco.

Where Automatic Doors
Meet Art

The first piece, titled my legs #2024, uses the automatic doors of the Nabtesco Headquarters office as its canvas. The doors’ transparent glass is covered with a custom film printed with photographs of thick rosemary branches and Katayama herself wearing the ALLUX 2 and the Mari K high heels, adorned with rhinestones and paint. Inspired by the rosemary growing at her home, taking root in the ground and spreading its branches to the sun, Katayama projects her own journey and the expansion of the High Heel Project onto the vitality of rosemary’s life force.

“Integrating art and an industrial product like the automatic door, the opening and closing of which creates overlapping layers, was extremely challenging, but at the same time, it was the key aspect I obsessed over until the end.” After numerous adjustments to achieve the perfect degree of transparency, she has created a piece that transforms with every slight variation in light and angle, like a kaleidoscope. The unique work, with its vibrant expressions that change with the door’s movement and the shifting sunlight, was finally completed.

The rosemary, the ALLUX 2, and the Mari K, symbolizing Katayama’s determination and willpower to pursue her dreams, all come together in my legs #2024. Katayama says, “If there is something you believe in and want to pursue, don’t mind the noise around you. All you need is to acknowledge yourself.” Capturing this conviction, my legs #2024 inspires employees and empowers the Nabtesco office, symbolizing opening the door to new challenges.

Learning the Beauty of
Teamwork
from Nabtesco

The second work is a video piece titled my way. “I always wanted to come back here.” The chosen location for the shoot was the Nabtesco Konan Plant, where she visited and had discussions with the designers of ALLUX 2 last year.

The video features Katayama, gorgeously decked out in the ALLUX 2 and her Mari K, walking gracefully and powerfully through the factory late at night. “I’ve left a bit of mystery about where I start, where I am returning to, and what the purpose is, so the viewers can see themselves in it,” she explains the ideas behind the video.

“I didn’t want it to be a merely descriptive or emotional video. Many people are moved just by seeing someone with disabilities walking with a prosthetic leg, but I wanted to create a video that transcends that.” Katayama approached the production of my way with an extraordinary determination to create a work that challenges societal perceptions of walking with prosthetic legs.

Working with a team was another big challenge for Katayama. In the past, she had mostly created, photographed, and completed her art pieces on her own. This time, though, she challenged herself to work with a production team.

Despite her apprehension about relying on others in her art-making process, Katayama was inspired by the teamwork she observed in the ALLUX 2 development team. “Everyone at Nabtesco has their own expertise, and they create the best possible products by trusting their colleagues and entrusting them with what they know best. Learning about how they work together made me want to take on the challenge of creating art as a team.” The late-night shoot went so smoothly no one could have ever guessed she had been a bit anxious about it. Best of all, the final video piece exceeded her expectations.

Unusually for an art video, my way was shot and edited in a vertical format. “I felt that a horizontal format would present the video from a third-party perspective. I wanted this video to be something that the viewer could relate to personally. I also believe the vertical format would create a sense of momentum and pull for the work, although the film crew was initially very much against this idea. (laughs)”

Through repeated discussions, expressing her vision, and trusting her team, my way became a visual work that is captivating in a whole new way.

“Seeing the innovative world-first platform screen doors with large digital signage in the Osaka Station Umekita underground platform, which Nabtesco helped develop, has inspired me to create new art.” Katayama seems to have already taken the first step toward her next new work. With her encounter with Nabtesco and her determination to embrace new challenges, there is surely no limit to Katayama’s ever-expanding creativity.
