Development of Environment-conscious Products

In accordance with the Nabtesco Group corporate philosophy, we are dedicated to using our unique motion control technology for the provision of safety, comfort and a sense of amenity in the world's transport sectors and in people's lives.

At the development and design stage of a product, we make proposals to the customer after identifying the needs of both the customer and society to promote the commercialization of new products, including environmental qualities such as energy conservation, resource conservation and recycling efficiency.

As a goal for ever stronger improvements, these anticipatory themes consistently uphold our ongoing activities, and have been highly evaluated by the market.

In FY2004, the "Two-Stage Screw Dry Vacuum Pump (vigo-vac)" was awarded the Prize of the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry for Superior Energy-Conserving Machinery.

Prevention of Global Warming (Energy Conservation)

Energy consumption is the most important environmental aspect in the business activities of the Nabtesco Group.

The three main sources of energy are electricity, heavy oil A and LPG; with received transmitted electricity accounting for approximately 80%. (Refer to graph.)

Heavy oil A and LPG are used in such applications as aluminum melting furnaces, private electricity generation and boilers.

We regard energy conservation activities as crucial in the prevention of global warming. In addition to management activities such as electricity conservation, we are engaged in the ongoing promotion of improving efficiencies for the effective use of energy in manufacturing processes and plants.

Notwithstanding that our FY2004 target for specific energy consumption was a 1% improvement, we achieved a 7% improvement.

Elimination of Inefficiently Used Waste (Zero Emission)

In May this year, the Nabtesco Group embarked on a new affirmative activity to achieve zero waste emissions from its business activities, as a long-term goal to be achieved within the next ten years. (In this report, zero emission is defined as landfill waste accounting for no more than 1% of total emissions.)
Following is a breakdown of the Group's emissions:

Valuable resources: metal, oil, cardboard, etc.
Recycle: oil, wood chips, liquid, plastic, etc.
Heat recycle: oil, packaging, general waste, plastic, etc.
Detoxify: water-soluble oil, alkalis, etc.
Simple incineration: general waste, oil, etc.
Landfill waste: sludge, plastic, glass, etc.

FY2004 Breakdown of Waste by Treatment

At the Nabtesco Group, we outsource the treatment of waste to professional waste processing companies. However, in addition to the categorized collection of waste, we are engaged in reducing the amount of waste that we produce, through improvements to manufacturing processes, etc., and in improvements to waste disposal processes (selection of waste disposal companies).

In FY2004, waste cutting fluid increased by 3% because of an increase in production. However, as we commenced the recycling of special grinding sludge, the amount of landfill waste decreased slightly.

The overall ratio of landfill waste was approximately 7% of our total waste generated. Through collaborative activities across the whole group, we will promote Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and by 2014, we plan to achieve our target of zero emissions.

Control of Chemical Substances

1. PRTR Substances
In accordance with the March 2003 enforcement of the PRTR Law, the Nabtesco Group has identified amounts of such substances it handles. (The Pollutant Release and Transfer Register Law governs the promotion of improvements to assessing and managing the emissions of specified chemical substances into the environment.)

We identified 18 target chemical substances.
Total amount :43t
Amount emitted to the atmosphere :35t
Emissions to water or soil :0t

We identified 18 target chemical substances. Total amount :43t Amount emitted to the atmosphere :35t Emissions to water or soil :0t Most toluene and xylene was emitted as part of painting processes, and the amounts handled and emitted both increased slightly in line with an increased production.

2. PCB Contaminated Substances (electrical facilities)

In accordance with the June 2001 PCB Law, the Nabtesco Group appropriately stores PCB contaminated transformers and stabilizers. (The Polychlorinated Biphenyl Law is a special measures law for promoting the appropriate disposal of PCBs.)

Condensers: 215
Stabilizers: 205
Following development of PCB treatment facilities, the Japan Environmental Safety Corporation (JESCO) will process these by 2016.
